In our continued effort to foster relationships with Allied Organizations within our community, I recently attended a local IABC event. The keynote speaker was Jackie Brock-Doyle, Director of Communications & Public Affairs for the London 2012 Organizing Committee. Her very informative presentation was on “Inspiring Strategic Communications – Going Beyond the Marketing Plan” and I wanted to share my main takeaways with you as I found that lots of her advice could be applied when running our chapters.

Meeting the needs of our chapter’s members
As the VP of Education and Programs for the ISES Austin chapter I always want to make sure that we are presenting engaging and relevant educational content to our members. The first action that I undertook last June was to survey our membership to see what was on their minds. I came up with 20 potential topics that I thought would be of value and asked for feedback. Through our communications team, we sent out a document where our members would give a score from 1 to 5 for each topic based on their level of interest. (A score of 1 signifified “no interest” in the topic, while a score of 5 signified that the member was “very interested” in the topic.) The topics with the highest overall score would be chosen as the topics for our monthly educational meetings. Through this methodology, we would cast the widest net, so to speak. With the opening of the new Formula One track here in Austin, we were not surprised that our members scored highest a meeting on that topic. The topics of “Social Media’’ and “Luxury Vendors” also garnered a lot of interest. Conversely, two topics that did not receive high scores dealt with “Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Quincenearas” and “Interns: How to find them and best utilize them.”

Check out this article from Sports Illustrated Online and learn how Conor Mongan, owner of SUM Booth (www.sumbooth.com), invented those crazy, big heads you see at college basketball games while players are attempting foul shots.

Neil Leeson Decor Floral no longer has a trash service. Instead, 95 percent of the materials being thrown into the trash are either being recycled or composted, which prior to September 2012 was all going straight to the landfill. The owner of the company grew up in New York where recycling is mandated so moving to Ohio sought a challenge he was not expecting. Neil Leeson Decor Floral expanded and moved to a new location in June and July 2012 offering lessons on all the new expenses, signing new utilities contracts, etc. The major development came from trying to find a trash service and hopefully a recycling bin as well. Due to the unorganized and poorly executed trash service we received, we looked elsewhere for recycling. At that point I was introduced to two potential services that ultimately changed the way we throw things away at Neil Leeson Decor Floral. A local government funded waste authority has a full force initiative to compose food scraps. They partner with local restaurants, hotels, schools, and more. As a floral design company, we weren't offering much food (only the remains of our lunch) but other compostable materials. A month later we were the first floral shop to join the initiative. All our floral stems after design production as well as past prime flowers now join the food composting process. In the first 4 months of the program we kept over 10,000 pounds of compost out of the landfill. This was our first initiative to become more sustainable and what do you know, it's financially saving the company as well by being less expensive to recycle and compost than having a trash pick up.

Last night as I joined 580 other attendees at the annual Connector's Choice Awards in Cleveland, hosted by Cleveland Business Connects (CBC) Magazine, I couldn't help but be a proud member of ISES Cleveland. It was such a joy to see so many event industry professionals be recognized as the best and brightest individuals and groups that represent the local
corporate event-planning industry as well as the professional networking
community. The encouragement from other ISES members as a nominated finalist for Networking Star of the Year, to the congratulations afterwards for winning Floral Design Company of the Year made me so proud.
